Go Fund Okura

BY EDWIN CASTILLO

Once a legend on campus, Michael Okura is now forever in Bulldogs’ hearts and always will be remembered. It is the goal of the Bulldog community to support the remembrance of the Okura name by fundraising for a scoreboard in his honor this Friday from 3-6 p.m.

West Covina will be hosting a food truck fundraiser in the quad after school, and a percentage of the funds raised will be donated to the fundraiser. Since his passing was in the 2011-2012 school year, efforts made by the community have raised $34,000 total. Although that may sound like enough, the goal for the brand new scoreboard is $68,000.

Aside from being just a scoreboard as most students may reference, there is much more than that; Okura left a legacy on campus. He was a multi-sport athlete as a student at West Covina; he was also a great role model as a teacher. Okura taught English at all grade levels, math and social science in his early days, coached baseball, football, wrestling, tennis, and golf, and served as ASB Director, WASC Chairman, English Department leader, and countless leadership roles on campus. His passing impacted many; countless people showed to his funeral.

Although his spirit of leadership lingers throughout the school, the goal of English and AVID teacher Lyndie Lorenger and son in law and Graphic Arts teacher Drew Lorenger are pursuing the $68,000 mark this year. It may seem as if another $34,000 to raise may be too much, but an effort by the community may suit this fund best.
